Vancouver Island University (VIU) Fisheries and Aquaculture students received $22 750, in scholarships on December 1, 2014. The largest amount of money for internal awards ever dispersed to VIU’s Fisheries and Aquaculture students. Donors include world-renowned scientists, businesses and organizations related to the aquaculture and commercial fishing industry, community members, VIU faculty and alumni.
EDS ‘s president, Cedric B. Robert, former VIU Fisheries Alumni, was at the awards ceremony to present, student, Stephen Johnston, with the $1600 Vancouver Island University (VIU) ECODynamic Solutions (EDS) Inc. Achievement Award. Recognizing the importance of formal education in our field of practice, the award is issued to a student that has demonstrated a strong commitment to academic success as well as an entrepreneurial spirit, determination and leadership in the Fisheries & Aquaculture Technology Program at VIU. VIU provides industry-leading natural resource courses that are recognized and valued across Western Canada.
Cedric graduated from VIU’s Fisheries and Aquaculture program 15 years ago. While at the ceremony, he reflected that, “It was a wonderful experience and I’m happy to support current students. I know first-hand how valuable these awards and scholarships can be.”
Stephen was also the recipient the $2,000 William (Bill) E. Ricker Memorial Scholarship. The late Dr. Ricker was one of the foremost fisheries scientists in the world, and his family members created a student scholarship in his memory.
